West Hollowcombe Farm is perfectly placed for exploring some of Exmoor’s most loved landscapes, historic landmarks and coastal beauty spots, all within easy reach of the farm.
Whether you’re drawn to dramatic sea views, ancient woodlands, characterful villages or family-friendly days out, there’s something here for every pace of holiday.
Step back in time at Tarr Steps, set deep within Exmoor woodland, one of the area’s most photographed and atmospheric locations. This “clapper bridge” across the River Barle is the longest and oldest of its kind in Great Britain, dating back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. There are some excellent circular walks to enjoy or simply paddle in the river. The Tarr Farm Inn is our local pub situated at the Tarr Steps, offering a cracking pint and warm hospitality.
Nearby Dunster Castle offers a wonderful day out, with medieval architecture, terraced gardens and far-reaching views across the Bristol Channel.
Exmoor’s heritage runs deep, from prehistoric sites to traditional hill farms that have shaped the landscape for centuries.
Exmoor is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife, from the iconic Exmoor ponies and red deer to buzzards and countless bird species that thrive across the moorland landscape.
For a closer encounter with the native ponies, the Exmoor Pony Centre is well worth a visit. Otherwise, you’re likely to spot an abundance of wildlife simply while walking or driving across the moor.
Our own farm sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), with ancient woodland, river habitat and rare plant life to discover right on your doorstep.
Bring binoculars — you never know what you might spot.
Explore Exmoor’s charming market towns and villages, each with its own character:
Dulverton — independent shops, cafés and riverside walks
Dunster — medieval streets and National Trust sites
Porlock — galleries, pubs and access to coastal walks
South Molton — pannier market and artisan food
Perfect for a gentle day of browsing, eating and soaking up local life.
There are plenty of relaxed, memorable days out nearby for guests visiting with children. From wildlife encounters to nostalgic train rides, the surrounding area offers activities that suit a wide range of ages.
Popular family attractions include:
Exmoor Zoo — a small but much-loved conservation zoo
Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park — combining animals, play areas and dinosaurs
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway — heritage steam train journeys through the countryside
These outings make an easy addition to slower days between walks, beach trips and time spent on the farm.
Exmoor’s dramatic coastline is within easy reach, offering everything from sheltered coves to expansive sandy beaches.
For traditional seaside days, head to Minehead, while those looking for wide open sands and surf will love Woolacombe and Saunton Sands, both perfect for swimming, beach walks and picnics.
Smaller harbours such as Porlock Weir offer a more peaceful coastal experience, with cafés, galleries and beautiful sea views. Lynmouth has hands-down the best rock pooling when the tide is out and is a fantastic day out.
For those looking to add a little adventure to their stay, Exmoor offers a fantastic range of action and watersports experiences — perfect for families, groups and thrill-seekers alike.
Just a short drive from the farm, Wimbleball Lake is a hub for outdoor activity. Set within beautiful Exmoor scenery, the lake offers sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing and open water swimming, alongside lakeside walks and picnic spots for a more relaxed day out.
